Before he became the first Black Supreme Court justice, Thurgood Marshall represented innocent Black men charged with and convicted of rape and murder in the Deep South, at great personal and professional risk. The injustices he observed and experienced forever informed his understanding of the fairness of the criminal legal system. Sadly, many of the cases we work on here at the Innocence Project echo the issues Justice Marshall encountered almost a century ago — like misidentifications, explicit racism, police brutality, and prosecutorial misconduct.
