In the spiritual sense Odysseus is a hero, because he remains faithful and loyal to his wife and household. Although he has been wandering away from home for almost twenty years, the only thing that keeps him alive is the thought of his wife and son that are back at home waiting for him. Odysseus also lacks the part of the hero profile which includes having a good heart. Odysseus definitely does not have this because he kills people without giving them a chance. Odysseus is proclaimed a hero because of his role in designing the entire plan, and this helps him on his journey home, because he is well known to be a brave, good man. Odysseus and his men, though strong, would not be able to move the stone that closes off the cave. Only Polyphemus would be able to move the rock. He then tells his first useful lie, Odysseus telling the Cyclops that their ship is nowhere to be found, it was destroyed on the rocks. Though Polyphemus and the Cyclops race obviously have no great love for Zeus and the other gods, Polyphemus at least relies on the relationship between him and his father, Poseidon.
