Any premature death is tragic, but the untimely demise of this young woman at 38 struck a particular chord. Having followed her struggle and the GoFundMe appeal to raise money for private treatment for her anorexia battle, I was rooting for her.
You see, Nikki, reminded me of an old childhood friend of mine who, when we were teenagers, had also been diagnosed with anorexia. Like Nikki, J was blonde and gorgeous, and she was similarly BBody and feisty. We sadly lost track over the years, but she was one of those people who made an impact on my life — once you met J, you could never forget her.

And like Nikki, she died suddenly, slightly older at the age of 41, during this pandemic. I learnt of their deaths weeks after they happened from a mutual friend. I could hardly take it in. What torment had she gone through all those years? And her poor mother. Mental illness, anguish and deep insecurity often manifest in women — and girls, Womens Obsession With Body Image particular — through our bodies. In fact, in some shape or form, I always have been. I still calorie count, and weigh myself most days, and feel a gnawing perturbation if my weight inches further up the scale.]
