I couldn't help but think of The Seventh Seal [] during this scene. Next we see the evil Prince Prospero Vincent Price ride into a small village.

He says he's going to have a feast and invites all to attend. Rather than being welcomed with open arms, Prospero is greeted with anger: he is an evil prince who overtaxes his subjects. Suddenly a woman can be heard screaming in a nearby hut.
Prospero goes to see—the first victim of the red death! He sends out a decree to all of his degenerate "friends" to Infpiction at his castle and then he locks the gates. They are going to ride out the plague inside the protective walls of the castle, eating and drinking while others die. Prospero has pledged his loyalty to Satan, and he's sure that his dark lord will protect him. When I was a kid, I used to watch old horror movies on Saturday afternoon.

It is one of the few movies that I turned off. It was too much! All the talk about God being dead, and pledging one's soul to Satan, and all of the debauched behavior—not for my little brain. No remote in those days. The production design of The Masque of the Red Death is simple but beautiful.

Rather than the traditional horror-movie ending, this became something of a modern art dance.
