This region spoke to me in so many Personal Narrative: My Journey To The Lucinda River that I felt compelled to write about it and share my experiences and what I learned travelling to one of the most remote regions of Colombia. First, a little history on Choco. Choco is where the Spanish conquistadors built the very first city in the Americas.
Although lets be honest here, grand civilizations existed in the Americas long before the Spanish ever arrived. It is now one of the poorest regions in Colombia. The music, food, and even the language has deep roots of African heritage that enriches this region. The airport is located in Bahia Solano and you can take a tuk tuk to El Valle, about a 40 minute ride from the airport. I grew up in an Indian household, which means we use spices, and a lot of them. So getting used to Colombian food was something of a challenge for me because the food is so drastically different from the bold flavors that I have become accustomed to.

It is also a short walk into town so you are more central to everything. Locals run all the tours within the area. You can go on hikes to Cascada El Tigre a waterfall right on the beachfishing in the ocean, whale watching, snorkeling, diving, river tours, learn how to surf, you name it!
