Essay On Slavery In West Africa - and

I'm not sure if "General History" is the right forum for my question, but since it pertains to a matter that involves Europe, Africa, and Latin America, it didn't seem like it belonged in one of the forums dedicated to the histories of the respective continents. Here's my question: In the th century various European countries extensively traded in African slaves, buying them in Africa, shipping them across the Atlantic, and selling them as labor force to European plantation owners on the North and East coasts of South America. The usual motivation that textbooks give for this trade, is that it was highly profitable. This seems to make sense, but it overlooks the puzzling question of why the plantation owners in South America didn't simply enslave the local native Indians instead. Clearly the plantation owners had no scruples about using slave labor. Why then would they prefer African slaves over native Indian slaves? Clearly the African slaves were expensive because they had to be transported. One possible answer is that the native population was so limited that it wasn't adequate as a source of slave labor. This seems unlikely, or at least a weak answer. We don't seem to have any evidence that the population density in South America was significantly lower than that in West Africa.
